  1. The Nissan Qashqai was the most popular new vehicle in the UK in 2022 and the first car made in the country to top the sales rankings in 24 years.

    According to data supplied by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Paddington-designed, Cranfield-engineered, Sunderland-built Qashqai was the country’s best-selling vehicle in the previous 12 months.

    According to the SMMT, 42,704 brand-new Qashqais were rolled off dealership forecourts in the UK in 2022.

The UK registered 1.61 million new cars overall in 2022, which is the fewest since 1992.

Despite the continued high demand for new cars, parts were difficult to come by for the manufacturers. Semiconductors, which are used in a wide range of electronic systems, from infotainment systems to engine control, were particularly difficult to obtain.

In the meantime, the market for electric vehicles grew and now represents almost a fifth of new car sales.

The number of registrations increased from 190,700 to 267,000, while the market share of EVs increased from 11.6% to 16.6%.

With almost 35,551 registrations, the Tesla Model Y was by far the most popular electric vehicle, followed by the Tesla Model 3 (19,071) and Kia Niro (11,197).
